I have been a Realtor / Broker here on the Outer Banks, a specialized Vacation Resort Real Estate Market, since 1985.  In recent years, a significant part of my business is in assisting Banks with REO Asset Properties, and assisting individual Property Owners.

I have assisted several REO Banks including 406RE, BB&T, and Gateway Bank/Bank of Hampton Roads.  I have also assisted numerous Buyers who have purchased REO Bank Owned Foreclosures – including FNMA, GMAC, BB&T, Wells Fargo, Nationstar and Bank of America asset properties.  I understand the mechanics of the REO Transaction, and the expectations on either side of the transaction. I am experienced in contract negotiations and in understanding REO Addendums, and processing through REO Online documentation programs such as Equator.

During my real estate career here on the Outer Banks, one of the questions I am often asked is how I came to be known as “The SANDMAN.” In the late ’80’s, I was working with some folks who were looking at Oceanside Lots in Duck, a sandy dune area. The wife turned to me on the spur of the moment and said “You sell sand … You’re the Sandman”! I kind of liked it and have used it ever since. And boy has it worked! People I talk too sometimes cannot remember my real name, but they remember “The SANDMAN.” This was never more obvious to me than when I called a fellow REALTOR® at his home to discuss an offer. His 12 year old son answered the phone … when I asked for his Dad, and told him my name, “John Leatherwood,” he responded …”oh, the Sandman!” I got a chuckle out of that, I can tell you.

I believe that my success, in addition to my continuous efforts to provide superior marketing, sound advice, and personal service, is due to my commitment to my clients. Whether someone is selling or purchasing an Residential or Commercial property in the $3M plus range or in the $300,000 range, I want that person to receive the very best service in the market. The true test has been the repeat clients, and past clients recommending me to their friends and family. Now with 30 plus years in this profession, I still enjoy it!

So … although I feel I work all the time, I do enjoy time away – anything with my kids, the occasional 9 holes, and the beach. My golf swing is what I like to call a work in progress (and, I wish it would progress a little faster!). I also enjoy a good book, and have begun to do some writing of my own.
